To Fence or Not: What Will The Shape of Conservation Be?
For some fences are an essential tool to manage protected areas and protect neighbouring communities from wildlife. From The Summit of Mount Stupid To The Valley of Despair. Is There a Better View?
The eco-tourism experience is about giving the animal a place in our hearts. Conversely, knowledge of ecosystem processes, energy flow, homeostasis, genetic bottlenecks, and carrying capacity is not well understood by the general public, as it is seldom explained outside of scientific writing and lecture halls…” Prof Hauptflesich argues that the love of animals combined with limited understanding of ecosystems leads to unproductive debates in conservation. In this talk he will use human-elephant conflict to show how the Dunning-Kruger Effect plays out in conservation, where limited and superficial knowledge could lead to negative spirals in public debate.
