“Be brave and do for Africa what Mr Mandela did for South Africa. You could be the Madiba of Climate change”.
This Mandela Day, LCA Spark Talks Youth Speakers put this challenge to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to take #actionfornature and the future of our youth and planet.
Spark Talks was filmed at Atlantic Film Studios in Cape Town on 16 July. On stage, youth eco-warriors addressed their peers and shared their inspiring conservation lessons and stories.
Ruby Sampson, Alex Koopman and Cassidy Iackay from the African Climate Alliance put the challenge to Ramaphosa to be the leader the youth, and the planet, needs him to be.
Speaking about the climate disaster, they addressed the president in a call to action for South African leadership to secure the future of the youth.
“Mr President, if you don’t act now you will be responsible for condemning an entire continent to climate apartheid. Only the rich will survive”.
Ruby, Alex, and Cassidy spoke about climate change, the looming disaster and what the youth, and national and international leadership, can do about it. “It is like a disaster movie when a catastrophe is obviously going to happen but nobody is taking attention to it,” they said.
The three young speakers highlighted the fact that we have 11 years to save the planet.
“We are all scared… the big question is – when is a hero going to save us? Who is going to help us?,” the trio said.
In the audience were pupils from Bloubergrant High, Sinenjongo High, Simunye High, Generation Schools and Sophakama Primary and Hoërskool DF Malan. The event was facilitated by video editor and actress Nomfundo Lucia Masango and supported by The Cape Town Science Centre, The Beach Co-op, the Two Oceans Aquarium, Shop Zero South Africa, Struik Nature and City of Cape Town Junior City Council.
