Launching Plastic Free July with WWF South Africa, The Beach Co-op and Twyg magazine

WWF South Africa, The Beach Co-op and Twyg magazine launched Plastic Free July with a beach cleanup in Mouille Point, Cape Town on Saturday 29 June, 2019. LCA Spark Talks joined the campaign and in two hours hours, a group of 50 people collected 74.5kg of waste including 1237 cooldrink lids and 628 earbuds.

The international month-long campaign raises awareness about the irresponsible use of plastic and about plastic pollution. Plastics have become an essential part of our modern society, but there are certain applications where you can just say “No”.

WWF South Africa, The Beach Co-op and Twyg are challenging South Africans to give up chip packets, earbuds and plastic bottles for the month. Together we can reduce the litter stream that UCT scientist, Dr Peter Ryan says is “growing faster even than our burgeoning human population”.
